Why are some students still failing,
and what can we do about it?
Chapter 9:
Rollins (2014) sites 5 causes of failure, even though there are various circumstances and reasons.
These problems indicate what we Kaiako need to change:
Homework challenges
Zeros or low grades given for missing work
Lack of targeted, ongoing assessment and intervention
Low student motivation
Weak skills or knowledge gaps
What to do when students fail-
RETENTION VERSUS PROMOTION:
This area in the chapter sung out for me because even after all the research-based strategy and interventions used, even after increased student efficacy and well-intentioned acceleration and tutoring programmes, given all of this, there is STILL ‘that-one-akonga’ who presents minimum requirements to pass. After all the rigor in the development of a wrap around programme to promote learning; keeping a student at the same level in the hope that they ‘get it’, just is not the way to support a learner to bridge their gaps. Keeping akonga back is not the answer. Silberglitt, Jimerson, Burns, and Appleton (2006) research indicates that retention is not an intervention for academic achievement. This leaves promotion.
